The SensAble Technologies, who are the makers of PHANTOM product line of haptic devices, makes it possible for users to touch and manipulate virtual objects. Different models in the Phantom product line meet the varying needs of both research and commercial customers. The Phantom Premium models are high-precision instruments and, within the Phantom product line, provide the largest workspaces and highest forces, and some offer 6DOF capabilities. Of the two devices, the PHANTOM Desktop delivers higher fidelity, stronger forces, and lower friction, while according to them the PHANTOM Omni is the most cost-effective haptic device available today.I personally never tried any of these haptic devices but sound pretty cool and convenient.

Text to Speech Software
May 6th, 2009 by teresa.donofrioThis program lets you listen to text instead of reading on screen, It uses ‘Text to Speech’ technology to synthesize natural sounding speech from ordinary text. All you have to do is copy text to the clipboard or import from text files and just listen as IISC reads it back to you. It also allows you to convert text into a MP3/WAV audio file so you can listen later. Create MP3 files from your email, news articles, any text you want, and also download to your portable MP3 player. It a windows based program and it supports all of the following:Windows 95,,Windows 98,Windows ME,WindowsNT,Windows 2000,Windows XP.
Google Audio Indexing
April 27th, 2009 by HarrisonGoogle is indexing political videos on youtube. With a search, one can easily find what a politician has to say about a particular subject. Check it out http://labs.google.com/gaudi/

Google wants to unleash this powerful tool to index all of youtube’s shenanigans, after they’ve tested it on politics.
What google says about the technology:
Google Audio Indexing uses speech technology to transform spoken words into text and leverages the Google indexing technology to return the best results to the user.
The returned videos are ranked based — among other things — on the spoken content, the metadata, the freshness.
We periodically crawl the YouTube political channels for new content. As soon as a new video is uploaded to YouTube, it is processed by our system and made available in our index for people to search.
I did some research into what they are actually using to detect the speech patterns. It is called Hidden Markov Modelling. Here is a pdf explaining some of the mathematics behind it.
Speech recognition is really cool, but the methods involved seem very advanced and I am having trouble understanding what I’ve been reading. I would like to share some other documents I came across that I thought were interesting.
Directed Speech (VoiceXML) Assignment
April 23rd, 2009 by Jeanine MeyerPlease prepare a VoiceXML application for Tellme Studio. This is due for presentation on May 4th (the last day of class). Prepare a 1-pager summarizing the application and providing some or all of a possible dialog. Keep it to one page. Your application should have error handling; for example handling of no match and no input situations. The complexity should be about that of my rock paper scissors.
Do test your application by recruiting people not in the class.
Make your proposal as a reply comment to this post. Please do this by Monday, 4/27.
Speech Software
April 20th, 2009 by emilie.buseNuance makes Dragon, a naturally speaking speech recognition software. It can be found here: at http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/. They showcase some of its uses, such as the empowerment of business professionals, turning talk into text, Dragon Professional – for police forces in this case, and Dragon Legal for attorneys.
It can be for personal use, businesses, enterprises, or developers. They have demos and a typing challenge that is meant to demonstrate and put emphasis on the fact that most people cannot type nearly as fast as they can speak. This software is being pushed towards consumers who do a large deal of typing and are slow at it, because the software makes their whatever they do easier.
I can see how it may be helpful for people who are working from home and/or in the office and do a great deal of typing, but I would be interested to know the amount of people who use this software that use it for leisure purposes. It seems to me that type of consumer might be better off learning to type faster, but sometimes people are not willing to put the time in to learn and think the money is well spent. I am not sure if I agree with that.

Percentage of eligible votes in 2008 Election
March 23rd, 2009 by teresa.donofrioThe voting age population for the 2008 election was 231,229,580. The actual voter turnout was of 132,618,580 , so the turnout of voting-age population was of 56.8%. I also checked other sites on the internet and found different answers: 62.5, 60.7,61.7,,64.1, and up to 67 %. But I looked even further and believe that the most accurate is the 56.8% (still not 100% sure). There doesen’t seem to be an accurate percentage, at least form what I serched.
